We present a resource to know the status of Nueva Pescanova permits

The lack of transparency regarding the status of the necessary permits for the installation of the first industrial octopus farm in Las Palmas has meant that we must file a contentious-administrative appeal before the Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, España.

We have been fighting for months against the octopus farm that is intended to be installed in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and working to bring to light the terrible reality of octopus farming.

Eurogroup for Animals, a coalition of which we are a part and with which we are working on this campaign, has received information from sources in Spain about the operations planned by Nueva Pescanova for this future farm. In summary, the farm plans include the construction of a two-story building with:

  • 40-60 fattening tanks
  • 550-650 settlement tanks
  • 90-110 larval tanks
  • 22-36 tanks for breeding octopuses

The first steps to establish production on the farm include the use of 100 individuals for reproductive purposes; 30 females and 70 males housed in 20 15 m3 tanks will be used. The transport of some individuals from the Nueva Pescanova research facilities in northern Spain is also contemplated as a support measure. Once the eggs are obtained, the males will be removed from the tanks. The paralarvae will be kept at densities of 10 kg/m3 for 80-90 days, but it is planned to increase the densities when they have optimized the system. Next, the juveniles of around 1 kg will be transferred to the fattening tanks, where they will remain between 3 and 4 months until they reach the slaughter weight of around 3 kg. Thus, for the production of octopuses, closed recirculation culture systems will be used, as well as a continuous open circuit system for the different life stages. Nueva Pescanova expects to produce 3,000 tons per year once the farm has established its production capacity at 100%, which means that around one million octopuses will be raised and slaughtered each year on this farm.

We do not know what permits or licenses Nueva Pescanova has obtained, which ones have not, and what state the construction of said aberration is in (or not).

Several weeks ago, we requested this information, based on the Transparency Law, both from the City Council and from the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, General Directorate for the Fight against Climate Change and Ecological Transition. We have not received an answer.

In collaboration with Carlos Contreras, renowned lawyer and doctor in Animal Law, we have filed a contentious-administrative appeal before the Court of Santa Cruz de Tenerife against the inactivity of the Ministry of Ecological Transition, Fight against Climate Change and Territorial Planning, DG of Fight against Climate Change and Ecological Transition.

We are going to exhaust all possible ways so that the octopus farm does not come true!
