Cientos de miles de crías de foca arpa serán separadas de sus madres, apaleadas con el infame "hakapik" (barra terminada en un arpón metálico) y desolladas para vender sus pieles.</p>

<p>Durante la matanza del 2008, murieron asesinadas unas 205.000 crías de foca. Ese mismo año, investigadores y activistas de la Humane Society de USA se interpusieron entre los cazadores y las focas, grabando luego las escenas de la matanza y <a href="http://www.animanaturalis.org/1261" target="_blank">denunciando ante todo el mundo</a> que las focas estaban siendo desolladas vivas. Canadá persiste en la campaña para limpiar su imagen frente a esta barbaridad, arguyendo que este año estará prohibido usar el hakapik en focas menores de un año, y que para hacer la matanza más "humanitaria" los cazadores deberán esperar al menos 60 segundos antes de desollar a la foca, para asegurarse que está muerta.</p>

<p>Dear Sir/Madam,</p>
<p>I am writing to inform you that as a conscientious individual and animal advocate, it is highly disappointing that the 2010 Winter Olympics will be held in Canada, a country that has legalized the brutal killing of thousands of seals each year. I sense that the Olympic spirit has been betrayed, as the Olympic Games are a universal symbol of peace.</p>
<p>International animal advocates who monitor the Canadian seal hunt each year, and also independent veterinarians who have worked on this issue, have reported that thousands of baby seals die in agony. While still conscious, struggling, bleeding and trying to escape or save the younger members of the group, most of the seals are skinned when they are still alive and die in unbearable pain. There are no quick deaths and no mercy killing either.</p>
<p>The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has film footage that testifies these statements.</p>

<p>In addition, the number of animals killed every year has grown dramatically and the poor condition of the ice is killing more and more animals every year. Many younger animals drown while trying to escape from the carnage. Most of the victims from previous years (98%) were no older than 3 months of age.</p>
<p>Due to these facts, I condemn the selection of Canada as the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics and hope that in the future, the growing voices of animal advocates will be heard and taken into consideration.</p>
<p>As a personal measure against a decision that in my opinion betrays the spirit of the Olympic Games and basic human ethics, I am pledging not to buy from companies sponsoring these Games, and I will encourage others to do the same.</p>
<p>I am sure that this email will be well received considering that public opinion is one of your criteria for selecting the hosts of the Olympic Games.<br />

Cientos de miles de crías de foca arpa serán separadas de sus madres, apaleadas con el infame "hakapik" (barra terminada en un arpón metálico) y desolladas para vender sus pieles.</p>

<p>Durante la matanza del 2008, murieron asesinadas unas 205.000 crías de foca. Ese mismo año, investigadores y activistas de la Humane Society de USA se interpusieron entre los cazadores y las focas, grabando luego las escenas de la matanza y <a href="http://www.animanaturalis.org/1261" target="_blank">denunciando ante todo el mundo</a> que las focas estaban siendo desolladas vivas. Canadá persiste en la campaña para limpiar su imagen frente a esta barbaridad, arguyendo que este año estará prohibido usar el hakapik en focas menores de un año, y que para hacer la matanza más "humanitaria" los cazadores deberán esperar al menos 60 segundos antes de desollar a la foca, para asegurarse que está muerta.</p>

<p>I am writing to inform you that as a conscientious individual and animal advocate, it is highly disappointing that the 2010 Winter Olympics will be held in Canada, a country that has legalized the brutal killing of thousands of seals each year. I sense that the Olympic spirit has been betrayed, as the Olympic Games are a universal symbol of peace.</p>
<p>International animal advocates who monitor the Canadian seal hunt each year, and also independent veterinarians who have worked on this issue, have reported that thousands of baby seals die in agony. While still conscious, struggling, bleeding and trying to escape or save the younger members of the group, most of the seals are skinned when they are still alive and die in unbearable pain. There are no quick deaths and no mercy killing either.</p>
<p>The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has film footage that testifies these statements.</p>

<p>In addition, the number of animals killed every year has grown dramatically and the poor condition of the ice is killing more and more animals every year. Many younger animals drown while trying to escape from the carnage. Most of the victims from previous years (98%) were no older than 3 months of age.</p>
<p>Due to these facts, I condemn the selection of Canada as the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics and hope that in the future, the growing voices of animal advocates will be heard and taken into consideration.</p>
<p>As a personal measure against a decision that in my opinion betrays the spirit of the Olympic Games and basic human ethics, I am pledging not to buy from companies sponsoring these Games, and I will encourage others to do the same.</p>
<p>I am sure that this email will be well received considering that public opinion is one of your criteria for selecting the hosts of the Olympic Games.<br />

En pocas semanas comenzará la matanza de las crías de foca en Canadá. Cientos de miles de crías de foca arpa serán separadas de sus madres, apaleadas con el infame "hakapik" (barra terminada en un arpón metálico) y desolladas para vender sus pieles.
Durante la matanza del 2008, murieron asesinadas unas 205.000 crías de foca. Ese mismo año, investigadores y activistas de la Humane Society de USA se interpusieron entre los cazadores y las focas, grabando luego las escenas de la matanza y denunciando ante todo el mundo que las focas estaban siendo desolladas vivas. Canadá persiste en la campaña para limpiar su imagen frente a esta barbaridad, arguyendo que este año estará prohibido usar el hakapik en focas menores de un año, y que para hacer la matanza más "humanitaria" los cazadores deberán esperar al menos 60 segundos antes de desollar a la foca, para asegurarse que está muerta.
Esta semana, el senador canadiense Marc Harb ha exhortado a su gobierno a poner fin a la caza de focas; mientras PETA, IFAW entre otras organizaciones hemos lanzado una campaña enfocada a la concientización frente a la celebración de los Juegos Olímpicos de Invierno 2010, para visibilizar el tema internacionalmente y animarles a detener la matanza.
PETA ha diseñado este cartel que puedes descargar para protestar contra la indiferencia del gobierno canadiense; un spoofing del logo original, una alegoría entre un jugador de hockey y un cazador de focas.
También están presionando al comité organizador, así como al gobierno canadiense, para detener ahora la matanza de focas; o que sepan enfrentar el boicot económico al que llamarán para presionar al país.

I am writing to inform you that as a conscientious individual and animal advocate, it is highly disappointing that the 2010 Winter Olympics will be held in Canada, a country that has legalized the brutal killing of thousands of seals each year. I sense that the Olympic spirit has been betrayed, as the Olympic Games are a universal symbol of peace.
International animal advocates who monitor the Canadian seal hunt each year, and also independent veterinarians who have worked on this issue, have reported that thousands of baby seals die in agony. While still conscious, struggling, bleeding and trying to escape or save the younger members of the group, most of the seals are skinned when they are still alive and die in unbearable pain. There are no quick deaths and no mercy killing either.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) has film footage that testifies these statements.
In addition, the number of animals killed every year has grown dramatically and the poor condition of the ice is killing more and more animals every year. Many younger animals drown while trying to escape from the carnage. Most of the victims from previous years (98%) were no older than 3 months of age.
Due to these facts, I condemn the selection of Canada as the host of the 2010 Winter Olympics and hope that in the future, the growing voices of animal advocates will be heard and taken into consideration.
As a personal measure against a decision that in my opinion betrays the spirit of the Olympic Games and basic human ethics, I am pledging not to buy from companies sponsoring these Games, and I will encourage others to do the same.
