The recent flooding caused by the DANA has left a profound mark on the Valencian Community and other regions of Spain. In a matter of hours, torrents of water swept through homes, businesses, and animal shelters, leaving behind a scene of destruction and despair. Thanks to the swift response of the public and animal protection organizations, the impact of this catastrophe on the lives of hundreds of animals was slightly alleviated.
Among the most heartbreaking stories are those experienced by small shelters and refuges that fought against time to protect the animals in their care. At Ribercan, whose facility is located in a flood-prone area, they faced the overflowing river with dozens of dogs exposed to the rain. Meanwhile, at Santuario Darna, caretakers found their facilities completely flooded, with many rescued animals trapped by the water. Cat colonies were not spared either. Algegats Cuidadors Felins saw their facilities affected, leaving many cats disoriented, soaked, and without shelter.
Your Help Has Been Crucial
Thanks to the solidarity of hundreds of people, we have managed to raise a total of €9,567.37 through our Animal Emergency Fund campaign. This amount has been distributed equally among seven shelters and refuges severely affected:
- El Refugio Local de Gatets Meuxape
- Protectora de Ribercan
- Asociación Felina Hogar Feliz
- Algegats Cuidadors Felins
- La Llar del Gat
- Santuario Darna
- Colonias Felinos Massanasa
Each has received €1,366, funds that are being used to repair damages, replenish food and medicine, and rebuild destroyed shelters.
Additionally, we have coordinated with other organizations such as FAADA to ensure a fair distribution of resources. FAADA has supported additional associations such as Asociación Felinas de Aldaia AFA, Love Cats, Escudos Protectores de Picanya, El Rebrot de la Vida, Rescate Acogida Albal, and SOS Animalades, covering urgent needs for the affected animals.
Although we have taken the first step, the impact of this catastrophe will be long-lasting. Many shelters still face challenges in returning to normalcy, and the increasingly frequent climate emergencies demand that we be prepared to act quickly.
