Our research team was able to obtain images of a greyhound race organized in Andalusia (Villarrubia, 09/11/2021). Accessing these types of events has never been easy, because the galgueros know that they are being targeted, that we are going for them. These dogs are exploited to exhaustion and when they no longer measure up - after 3 or 4 years - they are abandoned or simply euthanized in the most cruel way.
Our commitment is to fight to the end so that the greyhounds used in hunting and racing have the same protections as the other dogs that live in our homes, since until now they are considered mere tools.
More than 50,000 greyhounds are abandoned each year, according to data from multiple investigations, including our own investigations. This type of dog is used as weapons to hunt fast animals, such as hares and rabbits, but also in races where they compete for prizes and bets.
In these races, the greyhounds are forced to chase a lure that pretends to be a hare, but not because they have a special hunting spirit, but because they have been played with them since they were puppies to stimulate them. Greyhounds quickly get excited when they see others running. Anyone who lives with a greyhound knows that running is fun. However, they cannot sustain that speed for long, because they wear out quickly.
When they compete, substances of various kinds are applied to them to deflate the pads of their feet or to make their recovery faster. There are reports of the use of arsenic, strychnine, and even other drugs or anabolics to achieve peak performance, despite shortening their lives.
Our Save the Galgos campaign is putting pressure on the authorities right now. We will be protesting in the most important cities of Spain, increasing the debate that exists on this issue. We continue to infiltrate hunters and galgueros, investigating and managing to unmask their exploitation and abuse.
Greyhounds, sighthounds, hounds and all other dogs used in activities such as hunting and racing must have the same protections as other animals, or even more. Being subjected to unnatural and demanding activities, they should be continuously supervised by veterinarians and have a rigorous control.
Our goal is to end these activities once and for all, but we know that this objective cannot be immediate. That is why we insist on greater attention to these animals, permanent supervision and very high fines for all abuse.
We need you to make a better world a reality for all animals. Join us and support this campaign, so that we can continue to get videos, press for the approval of laws and continue on the street giving a voice to greyhounds and so many others.
